Introduction

Crisis Management & Business Continuity

for

Counter Terrorism & Security Practitioners

About the Programme

.

The programme bridges the gap between information and execution, giving you the tools to turn theory into effective, real world strategies for protective security & counter terrorism in any size of organisation.

The programme has been written by an author with hands on real world experience from decades of involvement with Public & Private Sector Mitigation.

Programme Overview

Every organisation will face disruption at some point.

Whether caused by a security incident, major accident, cyber attack, natural hazard or another unexpected event, the ability to respond quickly, maintain control and recover effectively has become an essential organisational capability.

This programme provides a practical introduction to the principles of crisis management and business continuity for protective security and counter terrorism practitioners. Rather than focusing solely on plans and procedures, it explains how organisations translate them into effective action during a rapidly developing incident.

You will explore the relationship between crisis management, business continuity, incident response and strategic decision making, while developing an understanding of how structured frameworks support effective leadership under pressure.

Throughout the programme, you will examine the principles of organised chaos, incident response planning, business continuity, message management and the MoSCoW prioritisation method.

Together, these provide a practical framework for making proportionate decisions, communicating effectively, prioritising resources and maintaining organisational resilience throughout every stage of an incident.

By the end of the programme, you will understand how these disciplines work together to protect people, maintain critical operations, support informed decision making and enable effective recovery.

Whether you are responsible for managing incidents directly or contributing to an organisational response, the knowledge gained will strengthen your ability to operate confidently and effectively when it matters most.

Programme Aim

To develop the knowledge and practical understanding required to support effective crisis management, business continuity and organisational resilience before, during and after disruptive incidents.

Learning Style Option

During the programme authors Army career, he attended many courses. In the military, these courses are highly compressed compared to civilian programmes. For example, a course that might take four weeks in civilian life is condensed into just one week.

This is achieved through long, intensive days and nights, packing in all the information and skills as efficiently as possible.

To manage this, career soldiers quickly develop a reliable method for absorbing and understanding new information and skills. The system described below has been used successfully by soldiers for decades.

You may already have your own system, but if not, this one is proven and effective.

Here’s a step by step guide:

Listen to the audio explanations

For each lesson, sit back and listen to the audio once to gain an understanding.

Preview the Material

After the first listen to the audio, skim through headings, subheadings, bolded terms, summaries, and examples to digest the main topics.

As you skim through the topic headings, think about the audio points relating to those headings.

Engage Actively While Reading

Highlight key points and write notes as you actively read through each section.

Ask yourself questions as you come to each heading and look for answers as you read. This process helps you to digest the information.

Pause after sections to summarise key points in your head and write notes in your own words.

Break Down the Material

Read in manageable chunks to avoid overload.

Take breaks to reflect and process what you’ve read.

In short:

  • Listen to the audios.
  • Survey: Preview the material.
  • Question: Form questions based on headings and subheadings.
  • Read: Read core text.
  • Recite: Summarise and explain the material aloud or in writing.
  • Review: Revisit the material to reinforce understanding.
  • Listen to the audio one more time before moving onto next lesson.

Visualise and Organise

Create mind maps, charts, or outlines to see connections between ideas.

Use Spaced Repetition for Retention

Review the material periodically over days or weeks to strengthen long-term memory.

Apply Critical Thinking

Question the validity, reliability, and implications of the information.

Compare it to what you already know or other sources.

Look for real-world applications or examples to solidify understanding

Audio Listening

Once you have completed all the above, sit back and listen to the audio explanation one more time to help you assimilate the information.

The past two decades have been especially transformative. Working in the private sector from ground level up to senior leadership positions in challenging, fragile and volatile regions, he’s had a front-row seat to the relentless evolution of terrorist tactics.

This period has been a continuous journey of adapting and rethinking private sector security systems to stay one step ahead of ever-changing terrorism and hybrid threats.

Top Tip – As you move through the course, the progress tests will require you to have your notes at hand. You must pass each test to move onto the next module.
